Every year on April 23, the United Nations celebrates English Language Day to honour the rich history, global impact, and cultural significance of the English language. Chosen to coincide with both the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, one of the most influential playwrights in the English language and a writer who had a significant impact on modern-day English, this day highlights the importance of multilingualism and cultural diversity within the UN. As one of the UN’s six official and two working languages, English plays a vital role in diplomacy, international communication, and fostering global understanding.

Герценовская олимпиада школьников по иностранным языкам — перечневая олимпиада, которую проводит РГПУ им. А. И. Герцена. В последние годы она входит в число олимпиад высокого уровня. В отличие от многих других перечневых олимпиад, Герценовская довольно мало опирается на страноведение, идиомы и широкий общекультурный кругозор: ее задания в основном проверяют классическое владение английским языком. В финале традиционно встречаются чтение, аудирование, лексика и грамматика, а также writing (при этом некоторые классические форматы имеют свои олимпиадные особенности).
