Proverbs (пословицы и поговорки) Пословицы и поговорки (proverbs and sayings) — это разновидность идиом. Основное отличие между ними заключается в том, что proverbs — это самостоятельные, законченные предложения, в то время как идиомы — словосочетания, части предложений. Кроме того, в пословицах и поговорках обычно содержится какая-нибудь полезная жизненная мудрость, а в идиомах она совершенно не обязательна. Общая черта у proverbs и idioms — и те, и другие редко когда можно перевести на русский язык дословно. Например, идиома 'a piece of cake', переведенная дословно ("кусок торта") не будет иметь значения "пара пустяков, легкотня", которое есть у этого выражения в английском.
